The Gen 7+ judge ladder
| Judge phrase | IV range | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| No Good | 0 | Lowest possible - wanted for Attack on special attackers / Trick Room Speed |
| Decent | 1–15 | Below average |
| Pretty Good | 16–25 | Middle of the pack |
| Very Good | 26–29 | Competitive-ready |
| Fantastic | 30 | One point from perfect |
| Best | 31 | Perfect - the breeder's target |
In Gen 3–6 the judge also graded the sum of all six IVs: Decent 0–90 · Above-average 91–120 · Relatively superior 121–150 · Outstanding 151–186. Those games only commented on the single highest IV, which is why the old tabs ask for one phrase instead of six. Sources: Bulbapedia - Stats judge and Characteristic, verified 2026-10-11.
Questions
IV Judge FAQ
What does "Best" mean on the judge?
In Gen 7+ games (Sun/Moon through Scarlet/Violet), "Best" means the IV is exactly 31 - perfect. "Fantastic" is exactly 30. The full ladder: No Good 0 · Decent 1–15 · Pretty Good 16–25 · Very Good 26–29 · Fantastic 30 · Best 31.
How do I unlock the judge function?
Gen 7: hatch 20 eggs or reach the Battle Tree. Sword/Shield: reach rank 4 in the Battle Tower. Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl: win once at the Battle Tower, then talk to the judge. Scarlet/Violet: already unlocked - open a box, select a Pokémon and press + to toggle judge view.
What did judges say before Gen 7?
Gen 3–6 judges are NPCs (Emerald's Battle Frontier, the Ace Trainer in Gen 6 Pokémon Centers) who comment only on the highest IV and the IV sum - "outstanding overall potential" means the six IVs total 151–186. Switch tabs above to decode those exact phrases.
Does Hyper Training change what the judge says?
A hyper-trained stat is marked "hyper trained!" but the judge still reports the original IV underneath - a bottle-capped stat does not become "Best" unless it already was 31. Hyper Training never changes breeding or Hidden Power either.
What are "No Good" and 0 IVs good for?
Deliberately! A 0-IV Attack stat minimizes confusion damage and Foul Play damage against you, and a 0-IV Speed enables slow Trick Room builds. "No Good" is a feature for those sets.
